
LED strips and modules have moved beyond the gadget aisle to become a true lever for interior decoration. Their ease of installation, compact size, and compatibility with dimmers make them a versatile tool for reshaping the atmosphere of a living room.
Since the overhaul of the European energy label (EU delegated regulation 2019/2015), most residential LED products fall into class C or D on the new A-G scale, prompting manufacturers to continuously improve luminous efficiency.

Installing an LED strip in a cornice made of plaster or extruded polystyrene creates indirect lighting that reflects off the ceiling. The visual effect enlarges the room and eliminates harsh shadows. The choice of color temperature is crucial: a warm white (2,700 K) is suitable for a relaxation-oriented living room, while a neutral white (4,000 K) supports reading better.
A common pitfall is under-sizing the power supply. A five-meter high-density LED strip draws more than a low-quality transformer can provide, causing flickering at the end of the line. Ensuring a driver suitable for the actual total power of the strip remains the basic precaution.
2. Backlighting for Wall Niches for Frames or Objects

When looking to install LEDs in the living room discreetly, the wall niche offers a professional finish without visible cables. The strip adheres to the inside of the return, directed towards the back of the niche, so that the light creates a halo around the displayed object.
An aluminum profile with an opal diffuser avoids visible hotspots and homogenizes the flow. This technique works well for both a vase and a bookshelf, provided the niche depth exceeds a few centimeters to allow the light to diffuse.
3. LED Strip Under the TV Unit for a Floating Effect

A strip attached under a suspended TV unit gives the impression that the unit is floating above the floor. The floating effect relies on low-angle lighting directed downward, whose intensity should remain moderate to avoid glare from the sofa.
An RGB strip allows for color variation depending on the use: amber hue for movie nights, cool white for screen work. Feedback on the durability of adhesives provided with low-end strips varies, as they tend to peel off due to the heat from the unit. A clip-on profile solves this issue.
4. Recessed Lighting in Baseboards

Placing an LED strip inside technical baseboards (grooved or with a dedicated channel) produces a light marking at floor level. This type of installation guides nighttime movements without turning on the ceiling light and provides a continuous line of light that highlights the architecture of the room.
The LED baseboard advantageously replaces the classic nightlight in a living room open to a hallway. The point of attention: the strip must be protected with at least IP20 to withstand dust on the floor, and the passage of the power supply requires a discreet groove or cable path.
5. LED Strip Behind the Sofa for a Wall Halo

Sticking a strip to the back of the sofa’s backrest, facing the wall, creates an ambient halo visible only when standing or entering the room. The indirect lighting transforms the wall into a luminous background without a visible source.
This installation requires a space of at least ten centimeters between the sofa and the wall for the light to diffuse. With a connected dimmer, the intensity adjusts in real-time: dimmed light for relaxation, higher intensity for entertaining guests.
6. LED Profile Integrated into an Open Shelf

Embedding an aluminum profile under each shelf of a bookcase or open shelf allows for lighting the objects placed below. Each level becomes an independent illuminated showcase.
Series wiring simplifies installation: a single driver powers all levels. The challenge lies in routing the wires between the shelves without making them visible. Shelves with hollow metal uprights facilitate this work as the cable runs within the structure.
7. LED Frame for a Ceiling with Circadian Variation

A rectangular false ceiling box bordered with tunable white LED strips allows for the color temperature to evolve throughout the day. This approach, sometimes referred to as circadian-friendly lighting, raises the temperature towards cool white in the morning and lowers it back to warm white in the evening.
Tunable white strips require a two-channel controller and a compatible driver. The additional cost compared to a monochrome strip is noticeable, but the visual comfort during extended sessions in the living room justifies the investment for those sensitive to artificial light.
8. LED Strip Under the Glass Coffee Table

A coffee table with a tempered glass top becomes a luminous object when an LED strip is fixed under the frame. The light passes through the glass and casts a colorful reflection on the floor.
To prevent the strip from being directly visible through the top, opt for frosted or satin glass on the underside. RGBW strips offer the best compromise here: the white channel complements the vivid colors for a less artificial rendering.
9. LED Outline of a Decorative Wall Mirror

Applying an LED strip around the back perimeter of a large wall mirror produces a halo effect that visually enlarges the living room. The light partially reflects in the mirror, doubling the perception of depth.
The mirror must be mounted with spacers of a few centimeters to allow light to escape from the sides. This technique works particularly well on a dark wall, where the contrast between the halo and the surface amplifies the decorative effect.
10. LED Strip Placed on an Exposed Beam

In a living room with exposed beams, fixing a strip on top of the beam (ceiling side) creates indirect lighting that highlights the wooden structure without masking it. The light rises towards the ceiling and reflects back down, softening the overall look of the room.
Directly gluing to old wood can be problematic if the surface is uneven. A flexible silicone profile conforms better to the irregularities than a rigid aluminum profile. In terms of color, a very warm white (2,200 K) resembles flame and naturally complements raw wood.
Each location described here follows a precise architectural logic. The choice of the right driver, profile, and color temperature determines the final result much more than the price of the strip itself. Starting in 2026, the least efficient LEDs will gradually be removed from the European market (minimum threshold set at class D), which should simplify sorting at the time of purchase.
